The dog, a purebred Alentejo Mastiff, a breed with an average life expectancy of 12 to 14 years, spent his entire life with his loving owner, Leonel Costa, and his family in the Portuguese village of Conqueiros. He passed away in a veterinary hospital.
Bobi’s death was announced by Dr. Karen Becker, a veterinarian who had met Bobi on several occasions. “Is there ever enough time? I think not. Last night, this dear boy earned his wings,” she said in the post.
In a conversation with the veterinarian, Leonel shared the secrets to Bobi’s longevity. “Good nutrition, constant contact with nature, freedom to explore the environment, consistent veterinary care, and love. Bobi knew he was deeply loved.”
“His 11,478 days on Earth would never be enough for those who loved him. Goodbye, Bobi… You taught the world everything it shouldn’t forget,” Karen added.
Bobi replaced Bluey as the record holder for the oldest dog of all time. Bluey was an Australian Cattle Dog who passed away at the age of 29 years and 5 months in November 1939.
